Why MedAssist?

Learn about this first of its kind need-based program intended to promote the general welfare of residents who cannot otherwise afford prescription medication

In Santa Clara County, approximately 118,900 adults have a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus, 257,000 adults and children have a diagnosis of asthma, and 21,600 are prescribed epinephrine auto-injectors. Unfortunately, the rising cost of medications in the United States over the past decade has made cost a significant barrier to medication access. As a result, patients may take their medications less frequently than prescribed. Failing to take medication doses may be harmful to a patient’s overall health. For example, insufficient treatment of diabetes mellitus can hasten vision loss, end-stage renal disease, and death.

The MedAssist Program is specifically designed to support the “missing middle” population who reside in Santa Clara County. These are the individuals who, may be enrolled in a health insurance program, however, are forced to pay high out-of-pocket costs for life-saving medications such as anti-diabetics, asthma inhalers, and/or epinephrine auto-injectors.

The MedAssist program also offers pharmacist-led counseling and education services to further improve the health of the residents of Santa Clara County. As part of this service, pharmacists will assist with refill coordination, provide education on medications, address barriers to medication adherence, and more.
